| Route Notes | BC 13/10 4100m C1 20-22/10 4900m HPt 21/10 5200m Climb abandoned on 23 Oct 10 due tomountain dry conditions and unstable weather conditions. Youngsters team of French Mountaineering Federation (FFME) coached by Antoine Pecher (FFME) and Dimitry Munoz (French military group, GMHM). First expedition to explore Chhopa Bamare southeastern valley mountaineering possibilities. Had tried to plan at best the expedition, but few pictures of the mountain, used Googl Earth to estimate their BC location plus some pictures of the Chinese side of the mountain. Knew they would have to define once in situ their climbing objectives. Approach: The expedition first met during approach march with post-earthquake effects (epicenter was close from the area) having to trek on the almost completely destroyed road usually linking Gongar to Lamabagar, where they stayed 3 nights. They found also remnants of Chinese workers campsites who went there for the construction of a future dam (800 inhabitants including dam workers before the earthquake, only 70 after). Team put 2 camps in the jungle to reach its base camp at the footstep of the upper valley summits. Also met with village people there and some military guards, the first with whom they had a Buddhist ceremony. Locals had seen so far only a Japanese party trekking the main valley and no westerners at all since the earthquake. Expedition time: Weather was like a clear sky every day then clouds/fog coming from 10 am. Found mountain not in good condition, with a lots of rock falls every day. Would have needed more snow and permafrost to keep ground more secure to progress. Chose instead to try solutions on the borders of the valley. On 19 Oct the team had tried from BC to access an eastern 5700m attractive subpeak. First following some scarce trails, the group then used a thalweg, seeking for some solutions to access another valley giving access to Chhopa Bamare itself. Despite GE and maps preliminary research allowing some hope, reality on the ground showed only proper rock cliffs not allowing to go further. So they stopped around 4300m, just nearby above base camp. Other tries around in the previous days reaching some hills point kairned by yak herders or locals. On 20 Oct the entire group went to C1. From there in the days coming, different parties tried different solutions west side of the whole valley without success. High point on 21 Oct. That day 2 teams attempted respectively 1 secondary summit ridge (Antoine Pecher and Antoine Lang). 1 snowy ramp giving access to the same ridge (Dimitry, Yohan, Kevin, Renaud, third team seeking for a col on the border with China (Mael, Baguet, Eric). First team abandoned facing dangerous rotten rock section at about 5200m. That day Yohan and Kevin went back to BC. On 22 Oct Eric and Dimitry also went to BC. Others reached a lake close to the border. On Friday 23 Oct remnant 4 down to BC. That day they went up a 4900m hill above C1, the only so far without any kairns on it. Globally consider the area interesting for mountaineering, despite quickly facing with committed ground, with long ridges in unstable rock (loose granite). Best conditions for attempts would be snowy one to give cohesion to the rocks. Best solution probably on the right side of the face, trying to link some rockfall exposed gullies in the lowest part to north Eastern ridge in the upper one. Sherpas porter team arrived on 25 Oct, all team left BC on 26 Oct. On return on 27 Oct at Lamabagar, could watch a massive rock fall showing ground still not stable. Then at Gongar, all group felt a notable earthquake effect. Team put 100m of fixed rope during return march between Lamabagar and Gongar. Eric Jamet going to guide on Ama Dablam. Renaud and Antoine to help for reconstruction. All other members going back to France. |
