Route Notes BC 3 hours beyond lower Makalu BC, SSE of point 5235m C1 on glacier below point 6125m on National Geographic map C2 at West Col High point at SE Ridge. 1st summit bid from C2 on 13 Nov in good weather at 6:30 am by Cavigilli, stopped because had not had sufficient rest and was coughingly badly so returned to C2. On 13 Nov other 2 members arrived C2. 14 Nov Cavigilli and Janik to C1 while others rested at C2; it was too windy to try for top. 15 Nov too stormy with high winds so instead retreated to BC, clearing C2 and C1. 16 Nov left BC and went to lower Makalu BC (Hillary camp). Real cause of failure was lack of time: had trekking agency with no expedition experience, lost a lot of time with problems with customs, and porters stopped at wrong BC area, which meant members had to ferry loads to ABC->C1. French Baruntse expedition's leader said 24 Nov his group never saw this team in the mountains.
