Brian Hall - 27 May 84 Baruntse original SE Ridge route. Walk up until last day and done in alpine style - camp and dump at 18,500 ft as ABC for both Baruntse and Chamlang Glacier meet (on true left bank). To West Col (6135) and from there north-northwest to about 6600m (very near to point 6730m) and thence up SE Ridge. Letter from Jan - 30th April 84 BC established on 19th April. Brian Hall, Colin Brookes, Stephen Sustad and Terry Mooney went up to higher camp where Basque/American camps are for further acclimatization on 22nd April. Richard Chaplin, Michael Scott, Ariane Giobellina, Jim Fullalove, Molly Higgins and Larry Bruce went to camp opposite our BC on 23 April, climbing up to Col (20,300 ft). Next day when joined by Jean Afanassieff and Doug Scott. All climbers back in BC by 27th April, all having been up to 20,000 and slept high. Rest day 28th April. Celebration of Doug and Jan's 22nd wedding annivarsary. 29th April loads carried to 1st camp enroute to Baruntse via Chamlang Glacier. 30th April all climbers left to walk to Baruntse as part of acclimatizing for Makalu and also because its a nice mountain to climb. Ang Phurba, Ang Pasang Sherpa and Saila Tamang also attempting Baruntse in preparation for Chamlang. |
