| Route Notes | From Joni Hukkanen Facebook: Namaste, The exceptional weather in the Himalayas continued in Baruntse as well. Normally, areas that would have been snow-free at this time of the year were now under over a meter of snowflakes. The transition from Mera to Baruntse was heated in the snow, when normally progress would take place mostly on dry fields and rocks. This made making the trip difficult and also challenging. 31.10 we arrived at Baruntse base camp (5400m). We had been booked for 10 days to stay here. There should be a suitable weather window inside it to reach the top. Weather forecasts still showed really strong winds the whole time, so we were left with only one option to try to cheat. 3/11 we were on our way to Baruntsen camp 2. (6420m). Over a kilometer and 5.7 km of elevation in one day. In a strong headwind, the step was hard and staying up was challenging. N. After 9 hours of climbing, just arrived at camp 2 at sunset. According to the weather forecast, the wind was supposed to fall around 02-03 at night. However, this did not happen. On the contrary, the strength of the wind rose over 25m/s and there was something completely different in the bushes. I spent the scariest moment of my life with two other climbers in a tent side by side for 12 hours. At some point in the night, when the wind was blowing the tent, I was already sure that I wouldn't make it out of here unharmed. Three or four of our five tents broke or destroyed overnight. Luckily no one was injured or frozen during the night. In the morning it was stated that we had no access to the summit of Baruntse, so we set off to land towards base camp. Despite what happen we were all content and happy. We made it through camp 2. up to the bad weather and we were all fine. Baruntse has not been able to outline since 2019. At the same time, there were several expeditions with us and everyone had a trip to camp 2. I returned to Finland yesterday. Over a week earlier than planned. Weather conditions also affected Baruntse's exit. Blizzard had closed Amphu Lapcha sola, through which we had to hike away, so we had to leave base camp in helicopters to Lukla from which we flew back to Kathmandu. The whole trip from 13/10 to 9/11 contained many experiences and events that will surely stay in your mind for the rest of your life. I went for adventure and I got it with bonaris worth the money. |
