Route Notes We had 3 days of continous snow at BC on 13-15 Oct, eventually accumulation about 7-8 feet. A Russian army team's Sherpas fixed rope up to the summit the same day we got to BC. However given the amount of snowfall and the likelihood that fresh ropes will need to be fixed, they abandoned the climb and left on 16 Oct. There was another Czech team comprising of 4 members and I shared my permit with them. They got to BC few days earlier as I was doing Mera Peak. Two of the experienced members including the gentleman named as expedition leader on our permit attempted to climb from the front wall facing the camp before the snowfall while the other two members went up to C1, left supplies and returned. Unfortunately, nobody heard from the first team for 8 days. I was rather appalled at the apathy of both the other team members and the tour organiser in calling the rescue helicopter despite there being very good weather window for 3 days. There were three other young Argentinian climbers at BC, who also decided to abandon their attempt as general consensus was that it will be at least 7-10 days before snow settles enough to go further. I also hired a helicopter on 18 Oct and returned to Lukla with my Sherpa on 18 Oct. Apologies for not getting in touch in KTM as I flew to Delhi same day. I have been in touch with my tour operator since and as expected there has been no good news about these Czech climbers. I would like to bring to your attention that I believe that a rescue should have been called earlier to look for those hard-headed mountaineers and may be that would have saved their lives. It just highlights poor safety culture among the tour operators. One would expect better, given the sort of money that changes hands in climbing these mountain. Note: 2 porters & teahouse owner died at Sethopokhari after their stonehut collpased under snow. Those two Czech climbers are still unaccounted for last I heard.
