Route Notes BC near lake C1 on east side of West Col C2 before SE Ridge. Kipling Travel Baruntse 2008 led by Bo Belvedere Christensen - 23 May 2008 The team flew to Lukla on 17 April, and their first climb was on Mera Peak. They arrived at its BC on 26 April and all four members summited on the 19th. They left the mountain via Mera La and arrived at Baruntse BC on 1 May. They made two bids for the summit. The first summit attempt was launched from C2 at 6400m on 10 May by all four members with three Sherpas, Lhakpa Dorje, Pemba Chhiri and Dachhamba. They reached 6950m on the SE Ridge, but decided that snow conditions, including large cornices, were too dangerous to continue. They returned to C2. On 14 May they moved C2 up to 6500m on a col on the SE Ridge. A British expedition had put a tent there, and used the unoccupied tent as part of their new C2. The new site had the advantage of being closer to the top. On 15 May the second summit attempt was made from the new C2 by Cederkrantz, Christensen and Nielsen plus Lhakpa Dorje, Pemba Chhiri and Bal Bahadur Lopchen. Kvithyll did not participate because she was tired from the first attempt. They left camp at 5:00 am and were on the summit at 11:00 am. They were able to succeed this time because by fixing 150m of rope they felt they had made the route safer. (When they looked back on the slightly different line they had used on 10 May, they realized that it had actually gone over a big cornice). They returned to BC at 6:00 pm. They had no health problems on the mountain, but one porter died while carrying one of their loads away from BC. He was Kitabsing Rai, 33 years old from Chheskam-1, Solu. According to the leader, the Sherpas said he had been unwell when he arrived at BC, and he died west of Amphu Lapcha pass. His body was taken to Dingboche, where a doctor said he had pulmonary edema that caused a heart attack. According to the reports submitted to the tourism ministry by the police and the team's liaison officer, he slipped and fell on the rocks on Amphu Lapcha pass and died at Dingboche on 19 May.
