| Route Notes | BC at moraine at start of Madi Khola C2 on Southwest Ridge High point at site for C3. Just above C1 was difficult rock. Small wall and seracs between C2 and C3 also presented some difficulties. Above C2 mostly ice except snow on less steep section. By fixing one or two ropes just above C3 site would have surmounted climbing problems. Had 7 days rain on route to BC and during approach 1 Sherpa injured leg. Were attempting new route, not same as 1977 Italian expedition. C3 would have been last camp. Caslini hit by falling serac which caused him to fall 350m; was crossing couloir to descend to BC for rest. 2 others were climbing up at same time on same wall but were to right of where serac fell. Found body on 27th and buried it in glacier. No other serious problems. |
