| Route Notes | BC north-northwest of Annapurna IV as planned. 17 days snow BC. Tried for summit above C3 on 5 May. Klaus Schlamberger and Schauer going for site of C4 at about 7200m (lower than high point have to descend then go up to Annapurna II top). Fatal accident, then no interest on the mountain after that. Could have gone to summit next day, which had good weather. Klaus was already 7300m on main ridge and Schauer 150m above him and could not see where he was but he didn't appear. Schauer went down to look and couldn't find him. Then fog covered Schauer. Looked 4 hours in area of hidden crevasses; found no tent left at C3, set up another tent there and realized he must have fallen. Next day found Klaus's body at 7000m at start of icefall. He must have been blown off balance day before. Others went to body and buried it there in crevasse. |
