| Route Notes | BC at Mingbo (same as SW Ridge teams) High point on West Ridge. 23 Oct Schwarzl, Steenmeijer and Valkenburg arrived at 6000m on ridge in dark at 6:00 pm and had to stop here and dig out space for bivouac; 24th bad weather set in and went down; snow sugary and also obstacles. 9 Oct first tried climbing gully to right of ridge, but it ended in overhanging rock which couldn't pass on either side; stopped at 5850m and retreated and back to ABC. Spent half day on last day moving only 50m up with no protection in sugar snow; route above difficult and dangerous and weather deteriorating so decided climb was finished. No intention to return to this too difficult route; "it's way over my head" says Steenmeijer who led the attempt in spring 1995 and thought then he had identified a feasible route. |
