| Route Notes | BC at normal site above ABC before ridge narrows C1 at point 5826m on NGS Map C2 at Black Tower (usual C2 site) Biv at top of Mushroom Ridge by Murphy High point at fixed C3. Corrigan and Murphy made all the camps while Farrell and Shea climbed Island Peak to top. After C2 2 members made down to BC to meet others, then it snowed 24th and 25th. On 27th Murphy and Moriarty left BC but sick at C1 and down to BC on 28th. 28th other 2 members went up and reached above C2 on 3rd and ran into storm and back at BC on 5th. Corrigan and Murphy left BC 30th and in C2 in 31st and stayed there 2 nights with another snowstorm. 2nd both left C2 upwards and bived in snow cave already there at 6100m on most difficult terrain (had biv bag). 3rd continued fixing route and another biv on top of Mushroom Ridge at 20,500 ft. 4th Corrigan breathless and snow at end of fixed ropes, so down to BC same day while Murphy up to top alone (left 2nd biv on 8:30 am and on top at 3:30 pm and down the head wall to Ama Dablam glacier in darkening night and bived at 22,000 ft. Got frostbite on 2 toes of left foot during night. 5th to C1 and 6th to BC. Snowed on 6th morning, final descent miserable. Left BC 8th April by helicopter for KTM. Other 4 climbers on the way to C2 to day hoping for summit via a biv with top on 11th, said Murphy and Corrigan. Moriarty's account of later activities: 7th April - all at BC. 8th April - Murphy and Corrigan left in helicopter; Moriarty and Shea left BC and arrived at C1; Falvey and Farrell also. 9th April - Shea and Farrell down with stomach trouble (which plagued teams). Moriarty with Sue Harrington of Evan Smith team crossed ridge and made C2 but got into terrible storm and back to C1; Falvey stayed at C1 [stomach trouble?]. 10th April - much snow but these 3 got to C3. 11th April - Falvey and Harrington to BC; Moriarty at C2; Schifrin and Finley and 4 of Bulgarian team also arrived at C2. 12th April - Moriarty, Finley, Schrifin to C3 with 4 of Bol American team with Moriarty in biv sack. 13th April - Route above C3 very little snow; Bol American team went up above C3 but Moriarty and 2 other Americans did not try; had too little supplies for bid and too far from top. Moriarty decided climb finished and was back in BC same day and BC had been cleared that day. 14th April - BC to Namche for Moriarty to join other members. |
