| Route Notes | From Jon Gupta's Facebook page: Ama Dablam // Summit success! If at first you don't succeed, pick yourself up and try again. On 27th November, we set out from Camp 2 in search of the summit and soon realised it wasn't going to be the day. The sunrise never came, thick cloud had rolled in and the winds were much stronger than forecast. At an altitude of 6300m we accepted defeat and turned back. That afternoon Becks and I descended all the way to Basecamp to take stock. The rest of our little team of Tim [Mosedale] and Kenton [Cool], and their respective clients, decided to call it a wrap and pack up and head out to Kathmandu. They'd given it everything, played the high altitude game perfectly, but it wasn't to be this time around. Becks however wasn't done. I checked the forecasts, discussed logistics with Kame (our Sirdar) and ran a second summit attempt through my mind. It was possible, but would take a huge effort from everyone. We left Basecamp on 30th November and climbed directly to Camp 2 - a big task. The weather was warm, calm and inviting. The only other small team around were descending to BC and we had the entire mountain to ourselves - pretty special. We arrived into the legendary C2 at 3 pm and quickly put the tents up and settled in. Stove on. The alarm went at 01:00. I was feeling great after a good sleep, Becks less so, but coffee always helps. Lhakpa was up and ready as always, smiling and helpful as we climbed off into the night. The moon was the brightest I've ever seen, illuminating every inch of the Himalayan skyline, and the cold crunch under foot told me there was little in the way of wind. Perfect. Time ticked by as we retraced the familiar climbing from 4 days previous. The three of us quietly moving upwards towards the top, just the scratch of crampons on rock and our heavy breathing as company. We paused as we reached Mushroom Ridge to drink a little hot chocolate from the thermos and marvel in the sunrise - a distant comforting glow bringing so much promise to the day. It was magical. An hour or so later we arrived at the disused sight of Camp 3. From here the mountain changes from rock couloirs and snow ridges to 400m of step snow and ice up the main face to the summit. Tiredness and exhaustion were slowly taking hold of Becks, but her determination and mental stamina was unwavering. I kept an eye on the time and the weather, but both were on our side. We pushed on with regular breaks to drink and eat, and eventually we clipped into the final length of rope that finished at the summit. We stood still for a moment, blinking out across the entire Himalaya, not quite believing we had done it. The only people on the entire mountain, and the highest people in the world at that moment. It could not have been more perfect. |
