Route Notes C3 was pitched at 6300m on 16 November and was occupied by the summit team, who had set out for the top from C2 (5900m) that morning at 3:00 am. They were three members and three Sherpas: Dean Carriere (Canadian), Mark Joyce (UK), Simon Thomasson (UK), Pema Chhiring Sherpa, Rakesh Tamang and Tschering Sherpa. They reached C3 at 9 am. Progress then came to an abrupt halt when the Sherpas who pitched had C3 raised the alarm about the danger from the Dablam serac overhead which had developed a large crack and threatened to break off. The summit team turned around and retreated; all expedition members and Sherpas later that day were in C1 -- or were below it involved in the emergency evacuation of Thomasson, who was seriously ill with pulmonary edema. Thomasson survived and travelled by helicopter from BC to Kathmandu on the 17th. The remaining members met on the 18th and agreed they would not attempt to reach the summit because of the dangerous condition of the Dablam serac. High points reached by the climbers: 6300m (C3) - Joyce, Carriere, Thomasson, Pemba Chhiring, Rakesh and Tschering Pemba. 5900m (C2) - Jones, Butcher, McKinght, Holding and Gricar. 5800m - Cookston and De Almeida. The remaining members left BC on the 19th and the 22nd to trek to Lukla and fly to Kathmandu. Sherpas: Pema Chhiring Sherpa Rakesh Tamang Tschering Pemba Sherpa
