| Route Notes | After its new route on Lobuche East Face, the team aimed to repeat the Russian route on South Face of Ama Dablam (South Face to SE ridge, 1995). The team left Lobuche on the 29 April for Debuche and made Rivendell Guest house its BC. There they waited 5 days in very bad weather. On the 5 May the team left, reaching its ABC after 2 days on the footstep of a ridge located in the left central part of the South Face at 5450m. On the 7 May the team tried to put a fixed rope on the bergschrund of the Russian 1995 line up to 5600m; here the team got hit by a small avalanche, luckily without injury; the team went back to BC to observe conditions of the route better. After two days, on the night of the 9 May to avoid avalanches, the team went back to the bergschrund to take off its fixed rope, abandoning this night it hopes for the Russian route. In fact each brought 3 to 4 avalanches plus stone falls; during the night the team could hear some sounds of melted snow flowing through the gullies; The problem was that they would have been too much exposed during the first couloir (3 to 4 pitches of 60m) above the bergschrund, this one needing to be taken to reach the safe East Ridge. Yuri believes autumn to be a better season to try the route. This season anyway it found it to be maybe impossible to climb this year. On the 10 May the team decided to try for the normal route, reaching its ABC at 5100m that same day. Only Yuri Kilichenko went down to the BC to call for the liaison officer to get an official authorization for permit, which was accorded. Then they repeated the classic SW ridge route as follows: C2 5800m on 11 May C3 (6200m) on 12 May located 100m below official C3, much safer according to them - could find big ice blocks at C3 official location. Summit on 13 May and back to C3 (start at 6 am; summited at 2 pm, waiting there 40 minutes amongst the fog to get rid of it: it was so cold or windy; back at C3 at 6 pm. Yuri Kilichenko says they didn't use the vast majority existing fixing ropes, these couldn't be trusted as being poor quality ones (Korean ropes) and only good to use when you put fresh one yourself. Notably at Mushroom Ridge the ropes were in very terrible condition. The normal route not very technical, but can be a serious route depending on the conditions. |
