Fankhauser, Hotter, Hoerhager started from C2 at 5 am on 29 Oct. Hoerhager reached summit at 10 am, stayed on summit for about 10 minutes and descended to C1 at 2 pm and continued to descend to BC where he reached at 5 pm. Fankhauser reached summit at 1 pm, stayed on summit for an hour waiting for Hotter who reached at the summit at about 2 pm. He stayed on summit for about 10 minutes and descended together. Hotter suffered from high altitude sickness at around 150m below the summit. Fankhauser brought Hotter down about 100m. Fankhauser himself was tired and Hotter could not move by himself and it was getting late. They did not carry medicine and there was no walkie-talkie with them. At about 4 pm Fankhauser descended alone to C2 where he reached at 6:30 pm. Fankhauser talked to Kroell who was at C1 with Nicola Fankhauser. Then the situation was informed to BC. The expedition cook managed to bring up medicines and oxygen from BC to C1 between 11 pm-12 pm. Next morning around 6 am, Kroell and Fankhauser saw Hotter moving towards C3 and saw Hotter throwing away his gloves. Meanwhile, Adrian Ballinger with two Sherpas (one of them of Sumit Joshi's team) with oxygen and medicines started from C2 to rescue Hotter. Ballinger team met Hotter at C3 (6500m) at about 11 am and told him that they were there to help him. Hotter angrily told Ballinger that he does not need any help and can go by himself. Then Ballinger told Kroell over walkie-talkie about the bad condition of Hotter. Kroell talked to Hotter and convinced him that he needed help to get down and the Ballinger and Sherpas were there to help him. Finally, Hotter agreed to get help. He was given oxygen and gloves. Ballinger was in contacat with Dr. David from New Zealand at BC for the medication. Both hands and feet of Hotter were frostbitten. He was up on the mountain for about 15 hours without food. The Kroell team wanted to rescue Hotter from C2 by helicopter. But they were told that the heli-rescue from C2 cannot be done. The rescue team and Hotter spent night at C2. Next day five more Sherpas with additional oxygen and supplies went up to C2 to bring Hotter to BC. They arrived BC between 2:30-3 pm. Hotter left BC on 1 November by helicopter to Kathmandu and left Nepal on 4 November. Another member of the expedition Walser who returned to Kathmandu from Kailas-Mansarovar trip on 25 October left for Lukla on 28 October and arrived BC on 30 October. He spent night at C1 on 1 November, C2 on 6 November summited on 7 November. Walser left C2 at 4:10 am on 7 November and reached summit at 9 am. He stayed on summit about 15 minutes then descended to C2 at 12 noon continued to C1 at 2 pm and down to BC at 5 pm. He left BC on 9 November. |
