| Route Notes | The team first went to acclimatize on Lobuche East, which all members and two Sherpas. Tul Singh Tamang and Nima Dorje Tamang, summited on 12 November. On Ama Dablam, they placed their highest camp at 6250m, which Hobby said was safer than the traditional C3 at 6300m that was swept by an avalanche and killed six climbers on November 2006; he called his camp C2.9 and said it was better protected than the 6300m site, although some teams have started using it again, and no bit sof ice were falling off from above. The summit party left their third high camp at 5:30 am on 21 November. They were Hobby, Kongtorp, Lagerberg, Payne, and Riehe plus Lama Babu, Nima Dorje Tamang and Tul Singh Gurung. They reached the summit at 9:50 am and descended to C2 between 5:00 pm (Hobby) and 6:30 pm (Lagerberg). All were in BC on the following day. Health problems: Follows back was painful (see below). Lagerberg's fingers became frostnipped and were still numb on 29 November. On summit day, she thought her goggles were fogging up but later realized the problem was with her eyes, which had had laser surgery and therefore susceptible to reaction at extreme conditions. Payne twisted his ankle badly just above C1 as he was descending after his summit success. He was on crutches after his return to Kathmandu. Riehe got two frostbitten fingers above the highest camp on his way to the top. They were black, but a few days later they were blistering and expected to heal. Non-summiting member: Follows came on the expedition with a preexisting back problem. She climbed to C1 on 18 November and stayed there that night, but her back was hurting her now; she descended to BC the next day and never went up again. Sherpas: Lama Babu Sherpa, 23/9/68, Cheremy, Bung, Everest X3 Nima Dorje (Kala) Tamang, 8/1/80, Chitre, Bakachol, Khotang, Everest X4 Tul Singh (Tulsi) Gurung, 24/9/83, Laprak-9, Gorkha, Everest X1 |
