| Route Notes | SummitClimb International Ama Dablam 2008, led by Jason Thomas - 31 Oct 2008 The expedition established C1 at 5600m on 14 October and the site for C2 at 5800m was visited by almost all of the members in the following days while waiting for their Sherpas to fix ropes to 6300m and the site for C3. During this waiting period, a number of members went down to the villages, even as far as Namche Bazar to receive and send email messages and telephone calls; their six Sherpas were having a difficult time fixing the route to the Mushroom Ridge. Then during the night of the 17th, part of the giant serac known as the Dablam fell off, and next day another huge section dropped, setting off an avalanche that cleaned the snow from its path, which was the climbers path also, and left the mountain's surface hard blue ice. The Dablam was now about half the size it had been when the team had first arrived. On the 20th three of their Sherpas, Tenji, Thile Nuru and Ang Sherpa, finally fixed the route over a big cornice on the Mushroom Ridge and got to the 6300m site for C3. But on the same day the members met in BC and decided that the mountain was too dangerous to go high, and they even started leaving the expedition that day. The rest left during the following few days; the Sherpas pulled out with tents and equipment on the 26th. However before they left, six members wanted to climb to 6000m or above to see the terrain; they went up on the 25th. All six Sherpas, Ang Shera, Da Jangbu, Gyalzen, Lhakpa Nuru, Tenji and Thile Nuru went with them. Davis and Korte got to 6200m; Loos to 6100m; Kortens and Matsouka to 6050m; Ruzek to 6000m. Ruzek slept in C2 at 5800m that night while the others went down to BC. Thus the members high point was 6200m on 25 October by Davis and Korte. The Sherpas high point was C3 site at 6300m on 20 October by Tenji, Thile Nuru and Ang Shera. Two members left the team early: Boersma during his trek to BC fell on 2 October in Phakding village and crushed a rib. He nevertheless went on to BC and to ABC, but his ribs were very painful, and he left on the 11th. Danilidis left on the 17th: he missed his family. Sherpas: Ang Shera, 22/4/76 (10/1/2033), Patle, Okhaldhunga, no 8000ers Da/Dawa Jangbu, 4/6/79 (2/21/2036), Patle, Lhotse 27/5/08 Gyalzen Sherpa, 25/1/74 (12/10/2030), Patle, no 8000ers Lhakpa Nuru, 21/8/81 (5/5/2038), Phakding, Chaurikharka-5, Solu, Everest 22/5/08 Tenji Sherpa, 1/6/92, Patle, Everest X4 Thile Sherpa, 26/5/74, Choplung, Chaurikharka-3, Solu, Everest X3, Lhotse X1 |
