| Route Notes | First climbed Gokyo Ri and Lobuche East (summited 21 Oct by Starr, Jern and Mackay). Up from C1, Jern developed altitude sickness with bad headache and turned around at 19,700 ft and down to C1. Mackay and Starr to C3's site at 20,800 ft at 10:00 am. Now too late for summit by Mackay and returned to C1 so he turned around at C3 and down to C1. Starr had reached C3 site at 9:30 am and on to top at 12:15 pm; returned to C1 at 5:00 pm. All in BC 27th. Starr almost got hit by falling rock set off by climber above him. Starr was at climb leading to yellow tower and C2 ("most dangerous part of the climb"). Made no C2 and C3 because of crowding (no space available for camps). On way down rock fell from crowd and descent slowed by having to wait at little rocks, waiting for others upon descending slowly. McNally never reached BC because of old back problems aggravated by Lobuche East climb. |
